STC Acoustical Access Door

STC

An access panel is usually the weakest point in an acoustically rated wall. The Karp STC is built so it isn't: a 20 gauge steel door over 2 3/8 in. of acoustical insulation, sealed by a full-perimeter neoprene gasket that a keyed compression latch pulls tight. Independently tested and rated STC 64.

  • Hospitals, consulting rooms and spaces with speech privacy requirements

  • Classrooms, lecture theatres and examination rooms

  • Tenant demising walls where the wall's rating must carry through the panel

Choosing a size

The wall opening is the door size plus 3/8 in. — a 24 × 24 in. door needs a 24 3/8 × 24 3/8 in. opening. Overall trim dimension is the door size plus 2 in. in each direction, so allow for that on the finished face. Specify the smallest door that still gives working access to the equipment behind it: every extra square inch of panel is extra area for sound to pass through. Special sizes are available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the STC fire-rated?
No. This door is acoustic only. For rated assemblies use the KRP-150FR through KRP-450FR range.
Why a compression latch instead of a cam latch?
The keyed lift-and-turn compression latch draws the door tight against the neoprene gasket. Without that compression the gasket doesn't seal, and an unsealed perimeter is where sound gets through regardless of how well the panel itself is insulated.
What is the difference between STC and NRC?
STC measures how much sound an assembly stops from passing through it. NRC measures how much sound a surface absorbs. For a door in a demising wall, STC is the figure the specification calls for — which is why this door is independently tested and rated to STC 64.
