The KAWT Series Air & Water Tight Access Door is a flush access panel designed for walls and ceilings where preventing air infiltration and water penetration is required.

The KAWT uses heavy-duty 16 gauge steel construction with a 5-stage iron phosphate coating and white baked, paintable enamel finish. It is designed for environments including clean rooms, hospitals, laboratories, operating rooms and pharmaceutical buildings where an airtight and watertight access opening is required.

When to use an air and water tight access door

A conventional access panel can leave gaps around the frame that allow air or water to pass through the opening. The KAWT is designed for applications where the access opening needs to be sealed against both air infiltration and water penetration.

Typical applications include:

  • Clean rooms
  • Hospitals
  • Laboratories
  • Operating rooms
  • Pharmaceutical facilities
  • Areas requiring controlled environmental conditions
  • Locations where water penetration through an access opening must be prevented

The correct access door should be selected based on the requirements of the complete wall or ceiling assembly.

Air tight and water tight access

Air infiltration and water penetration are separate concerns, but both can occur through an inadequately sealed access opening.

The KAWT is designed as an air and water tight access door for applications where the opening needs to maintain a sealed boundary. Its construction and sealing system are intended to limit unwanted movement through the access opening.

For other specialized access requirements, Karp also offers air and water tight access doors as well as fire rated access doors.

Construction and finish

The KAWT uses 16 gauge steel construction with a 5-stage iron phosphate coating and white baked, paintable enamel finish.

The paintable finish allows the door to be finished to coordinate with the surrounding wall or ceiling surface while retaining the underlying protective coating.

Choosing the right size

The KAWT is available in ten standard sizes:

  • 8 x 8 inches
  • 12 x 12 inches
  • 14 x 14 inches
  • 16 x 16 inches
  • 18 x 18 inches
  • 24 x 24 inches
  • 30 x 30 inches
  • 36 x 24 inches
  • 48 x 30 inches
  • 48 x 36 inches

The wall or ceiling opening is 5/16 inch larger than the nominal door dimensions for the listed standard sizes.

The two largest KAWT sizes, 48 x 30 and 48 x 36 inches, use five stud catches, while the other standard sizes use two.

When planning the rough opening, always use the opening dimensions listed for the selected KAWT size.

Air and water tight vs. fire rated access doors

Air and water tightness and fire resistance are different performance requirements. The KAWT should not be assumed to provide a fire rating.

If an access opening is located in a fire rated assembly, select a fire rated access door specifically listed for the required application and rating.

Where a project requires multiple performance characteristics, contact Karp to confirm the appropriate product configuration rather than assuming that one access door provides every required performance characteristic.
