KRHA Aluminum Roof Hatch
SKU:KRHA
Karp Associates, Inc. presents a re-engineered roof hatch that includes several new and improved features. Karp's roof hatches now maintain heavy gauge stiffeners for added support and stability along with an increased gauge of aluminum for greater durability and strength. The exterior handle has been replaced with a push-button lock release located on the front side of the cover, shielded from environmental elements to prevent water accumulation and leakage.
All gasketing has been replaced with new wider and more durable gasketing to maximize the door/curb seal and ensure a watertight closure. All edges have been rounded for improved safety. Advanced assembly method allows for reduced welding blemishes. Roof hatches are available in galvanized model KRHG or aluminum model KRHA and are finished with EPA approved electrostatic paint.

The KRHA is an aluminum roof hatch for permanent roof access: roof inspection, servicing rooftop plant, and moving tools and components up to the roof. It is the same re-engineered hatch as the galvanized KRHG, built in aluminum, and it is specified for two reasons: it weighs roughly half as much, and aluminum does not corrode.
Weight is the reason to choose it
A 24 x 36 aluminum hatch has a shipping weight of 70 pounds against 135 for the galvanized equivalent. At 30 x 96 it is 245 pounds against 335. That difference is felt every time someone pushes the cover open from the top of a ladder, and it is what makes the aluminum model the sensible specification for a hatch that gets opened weekly rather than annually. It also reduces the dead load carried by the curb and the surrounding roof structure, which occasionally matters on a retrofit into an existing deck.
Aluminum is inherently corrosion resistant, so it is the better material on coastal sites, on high-humidity roofs, and above wet processes where the underside of the cover sits in moist air.
Built for weather and one-handed operation
The exterior handle was replaced with a push-button lock release on the front face of the cover, shielded from the weather so water cannot collect in the mechanism, which is normally the first part of a roof hatch to seize. Gasketing was replaced with wider and more durable gasketing to maximize the cover to curb seal and ensure watertight closure. All edges are rounded for safer handling, heavy gauge stiffeners give the cover support and stability, and the hatch is finished with EPA approved electrostatic paint.
Options and sizes
A RIM cylinder lock with night latch is available, giving keyed access from outside and a thumb latch that holds the spring latch retracted for open access during a work period. Karp can also build the hatch as a double leaf, which splits the cover into two and cuts the weight each person handles, worth considering at 30 x 54 and above.
Four standard sizes: 24 x 36, 30 x 36, 30 x 54 and 30 x 96 inches, with shipping weights from 70 to 245 pounds. Size from the largest component that has to pass through the opening, using the equipment schedule rather than the roof plan. Larger openings are made to order.
