The KFD-SD is a hinged standard duty floor door for concrete, rated at 300 pounds per square foot. That covers foot traffic, hand carts and stored load, which is what most service openings actually see: pump and valve pits, sump and meter chambers, vault and basement access, stair and equipment openings in plant rooms and back of house floors. Where vehicles cross the opening, the KFD-HD at H20 loading is the door to specify instead.

How it is built

The door is diamond tread plate in an aluminum extruded frame with integral anchor flanges, so the frame keys into the pour rather than sitting on it. Hinges are stainless steel. The frame is supplied mill finish with a bituminous coating applied to the exterior, which is the face in contact with the concrete and the part that would otherwise corrode first. Diamond tread gives grip on a surface people stand on, and it wears rather than polishing smooth.

Options that decide how the door works day to day

  • Watertight construction adds a drain channel and neoprene gasket. Specify it wherever the floor is washed down, can pond, or sits above something that must stay dry. Non-watertight construction is also available where the opening is dry and drainage is not a concern.
  • Spring assistance uses stainless steel compression springs. A 48 x 48 door has a shipping weight of 118 pounds and a 72 x 48 door 158 pounds. Springs are what make a door that size openable safely by one person, so they are worth specifying on anything above 36 x 36.
  • Locking and latching is available as a staple, staple and hasp, stainless steel snap lock, brass pentahead or keyed cylinder lock. Pentahead suits utility and municipal work where a standard key should not open the door. Snap lock suits a plant room where the door needs to stay shut against traffic but not against people.

Sizes and ordering

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a standard duty floor door used for?
A standard duty floor door gives hinged access through a concrete floor to what sits below it: pump and valve pits, sump and meter chambers, vaults, basements and equipment openings. Standard duty means it is rated for foot traffic, hand carts and stored load rather than vehicles. The Karp KFD-SD is rated at 300 pounds per square foot.
What is the load rating of the KFD-SD?
300 pounds per square foot. That is a pedestrian and light service rating. If a forklift, pallet truck, van or any other vehicle will cross the opening, specify the KFD-HD instead, which is rated for H20 loading. Rate the door for the heaviest thing that will ever cross it, not the thing that crosses it daily.
How is the KFD-SD constructed?
Diamond tread plate door in an aluminum extruded frame with integral anchor flanges that key into the concrete, hinged on stainless steel hinges. The frame is mill finish with a bituminous coating on the exterior face, which is the surface in contact with the concrete. Diamond tread is specified because the door is a walking surface.
Can the KFD-SD be made watertight?
Yes. Watertight construction adds a drain channel and a neoprene gasket, and non-watertight construction is also available. Specify watertight wherever the floor is washed down, water can pond on it, or the space below has to stay dry. It has to be ordered that way, so settle it before the order goes in rather than after the frame is cast in.
Do I need spring assistance on a floor door?
On the larger sizes, yes. A 48 x 48 KFD-SD has a shipping weight of 118 pounds and a 72 x 48 is 158 pounds. Stainless steel compression springs are what make a door of that weight openable safely by one person and controlled on the way down. Anything above 36 x 36 is worth specifying with springs.
What sizes does the KFD-SD come in?
Nine standard sizes: 24 x 24, 30 x 24, 30 x 30, 36 x 24, 36 x 30, 36 x 36, 48 x 36, 48 x 48 and 72 x 48 inches. Shipping weights run from 50 pounds up to 158 pounds. Special sizes and modifications are available on request, since floor doors are built to order.
