The KSTDW Sesame Drywall Ceiling Hatch is designed for complete concealment in drywall ceilings. Its concealed installation provides access above the ceiling while allowing the finished ceiling surface to maintain a clean, uninterrupted appearance.
The door panel opens to a check position for safety before releasing for a full 90° opening, and the panel is removable when required.
Where to use a drywall ceiling hatch
A drywall ceiling hatch provides access to services located above a finished drywall ceiling without leaving a conventional exposed access panel visible.
The KSTDW can be considered for applications where maintenance personnel need access to:
- Mechanical services
- Electrical systems
- Plumbing components
- HVAC equipment
- Building services above the ceiling
- Other concealed equipment requiring periodic access
The appropriate hatch size should be selected according to the equipment that needs to pass through or be serviced through the opening.
Concealed access in drywall ceilings
The KSTDW is designed specifically for drywall ceilings. This makes it different from Karp's other Sesame ceiling hatches.
For concealed grid suspended ceilings, Karp offers the KSTC Sesame Concealed Grid Ceiling Hatch. For exposed grid ceilings, the KSTE Sesame Exposed Grid Ceiling Hatch is the appropriate Sesame model.
Choosing the hatch according to the ceiling construction helps ensure the frame and finished ceiling detail are compatible with the installation.
Safety opening and removable door panel
The KSTDW door panel first opens to a check position for safety and then releases for a 90° opening. The panel is also removable.
This configuration provides controlled access when opening the hatch while allowing the door panel to be removed when a larger unobstructed opening is useful during service work.
Choosing the right ceiling hatch size
The KSTDW is available in five standard sizes:
- 12 x 12 inches
- 18 x 18 inches
- 24 x 24 inches
- 36 x 24 inches
- 48 x 24 inches
Select the size according to the access requirements above the ceiling. Consider both the size of the equipment and the space required for maintenance personnel to work comfortably through the opening.
Karp also provides architectural specifications and CAD resources to support project planning and specification.
Sesame ceiling hatch options
The Sesame range is designed for different ceiling systems. The KSTDW is intended for drywall ceilings, while the KSTC and KSTE address concealed-grid and exposed-grid ceiling construction respectively.
Using the model intended for the ceiling system helps avoid adapting a hatch designed for a different frame or ceiling condition.
