Floor Doors
Why load rating is the first decision
A floor door gets walked on, driven over and loaded in ways a wall door never is. That makes load rating the first decision and everything else secondary, because a door specified below the traffic it actually sees will deflect, then rattle, then become a trip hazard.
H20 heavy duty against 300 psf standard duty
Karp builds three models. The KFD provides access in concrete applications, and the KFD-HD is the heavy duty version rated for H20 loading, which is the rating used where vehicles cross the door: loading docks, plant yards, service drives and any floor a forklift or a truck runs over. The KFD-SD is the standard duty model, rated at 300 pounds per square foot. The KAFA covers floor access with a choice of panel finishes - a recessed 1/8 inch panel for resilient tile, smooth, abrasive coated, or embossed diamond pattern - in five sizes from 12 x 12 through 36 x 36.
The KFD-HD runs nine standard sizes from 24 x 24 through 72 x 48 inches, with shipping weights from 71 to 248 pounds. Those weights matter twice: once for the structural opening and once for whoever has to lift the door in service, which is why spring assistance is worth specifying on the larger sizes.
Watertight, spring assist and lock options
The KFD can be made watertight, spring assisted and fitted with a stainless steel snap lock.
Watertight is the option to specify wherever the floor gets washed down or can pond, because water finding its way through a floor opening ends up in whatever is below it. Spring assistance is what makes a 248 pound door openable by one person. The stainless steel snap lock keeps the door closed against traffic and stops unauthorised opening.
