The KSTE is the Sesame ceiling hatch for exposed grid suspended ceilings: the T-bar or drop ceilings where the grid shows on the face. The door panel opens up to receive a ceiling tile, so the hatch carries the same tile as the ceiling around it and the access point reads as one more module in the grid rather than a metal panel.

Why fit a hatch in a lay-in ceiling

Any tile in an exposed grid can be pushed up, so the KSTE is for the access points used again and again: over valves, dampers, controls and equipment checked on a schedule. A loose tile lifted every few weeks gets chipped and marked, and has to be pushed up, tilted out and set aside with both hands from a ladder. The KSTE holds the tile in a hinged panel that stays attached to the ceiling and closes back flush with the grid.

Opens to a safety check position

The panel opens to a check position first and holds there, so a panel released from below does not swing straight down onto the person opening it. It then releases to open a full 90 degrees. The panel is removable when the opening needs to be completely clear for equipment to pass through.

Sizes

Two standard sizes: 24 x 24 inches (610 x 610 mm) at 17.6 pounds shipping weight, and 48 x 24 inches (1219 x 610 mm) at 32.6 pounds. These correspond to the common 2 x 2 and 2 x 4 ceiling modules. Check the grid layout against the CAD drawing before ordering, and allow for the weight of the tile the panel will carry.

Exposed or concealed grid

Choose by what the ceiling shows. Where the grid is visible on the face, use the KSTE. Where the grid is hidden behind the tiles, use the KSTC concealed grid ceiling hatch. For a drywall ceiling, use the KSTDW Sesame drywall ceiling hatch.

Before specifying

Karp publishes no fire rating for the KSTE, so it does not belong in a rated ceiling assembly. There, specify a listed door such as the KRP-350FR. Place the hatch where the panel can swing through 90 degrees without striking light fittings, diffusers or sprinkler heads next to it. Then add the size and quantity to your distributor quote and Karp will connect you with the nearest authorized distributor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an exposed grid ceiling hatch?
An exposed grid ceiling hatch is an access door built for a suspended ceiling where the T-bar grid shows on the face. The panel holds a ceiling tile, so the hatch matches the ceiling around it, and it opens on a hinge instead of the tile being lifted out by hand. Karp's model is the KSTE.
Does the KSTE take a ceiling tile?
Yes. The KSTE door panel opens up to receive a tile, so the hatch carries the same tile as the rest of the ceiling and reads as one more module in the grid.
How does the KSTE panel open?
The panel first opens to a check position and holds there, so it does not swing straight down onto the person opening it. It then releases to open a full 90 degrees. The panel is also removable when the opening has to be completely clear.
What sizes does the KSTE come in?
Two standard sizes: 24 x 24 inches (610 x 610 mm) with a shipping weight of 17.6 pounds, and 48 x 24 inches (1219 x 610 mm) at 32.6 pounds. These correspond to the common 2 x 2 and 2 x 4 suspended ceiling modules.
What is the difference between the KSTE and the KSTC?
The ceiling grid. The KSTE is for exposed grid ceilings, where the T-bar shows on the face. The KSTC is for concealed grid ceilings, where the grid is hidden behind the tiles. Both use the same check position opening, and both come in 24 x 24 and 48 x 24. For a drywall ceiling, the Sesame model is the KSTDW.
Is the KSTE fire rated?
Karp does not publish a fire rating for the KSTE, so it should not be used where the ceiling is part of a rated assembly. For a rated ceiling, specify a listed door such as the KRP-150FR or the KRP-350FR, both listed by Warnock Hersey for 3 hours in ceilings.
