The MXPL is an insulated exterior access door designed for installation in outdoor walls and soffits finished with plaster or stucco. Its plaster and stucco flange is designed to integrate with the surrounding finish, providing a practical access opening while maintaining a finished exterior appearance.
The MXPL combines galvanized steel construction, a galvanized hinge, Karp's electrostatic rust-inhibitive powder finish, a closed-cell neoprene gasket and a Lift & Turn Compression Latch to help protect the opening from outdoor exposure.
Where to use a plaster and stucco access door
Exterior walls and soffits require access doors that can withstand exposure to moisture and changing outdoor conditions. The MXPL is specifically suited to exterior surfaces finished with plaster or stucco.
Typical applications include:
- Exterior walls
- Stucco-clad walls
- Plaster-finished exterior surfaces
- Exterior soffits
- Building service access points
- Locations where mechanical or building services require exterior access
The plaster and stucco flange allows the surrounding finish to be incorporated around the access door rather than leaving a conventional surface-mounted frame exposed.
MXPL vs. standard exterior access doors
The main difference between the MXPL and a standard flush exterior access door is the surrounding finish.
Karp's MX Insulated Exterior Access Door is designed as a flush exterior access door, while the MXPL includes a plaster and stucco flange for exterior walls and soffits finished with these materials.
Choose the MXPL when the access door needs to integrate with a plaster or stucco exterior finish. For other exterior wall and soffit applications, see Karp's exterior access doors.
Weather protection and sealing
The MXPL uses a closed-cell neoprene gasket together with a Lift & Turn Compression Latch to create a tight seal between the door and frame.
Karp also arc-welds and ground-smooths the corners of the trim and pan. The galvanized steel construction, galvanized hinge and rust-inhibitive powder finish provide additional protection for exterior applications.
These features are important when an access opening is exposed to outdoor conditions and needs protection from moisture.
Insulated exterior access
The MXPL includes Styrofoam insulation designed to provide resistance to water and water vapor. Insulation is particularly useful where an access door is installed in an exterior wall or soffit because the opening interrupts the surrounding building enclosure.
When specifying an exterior access door, consider the wall construction, exterior finish, location and required access size together.
Standard and custom sizes
The MXPL is available in standard sizes of 12 x 12, 18 x 18, 24 x 24, 30 x 22, 30 x 30, 36 x 24 and 36 x 36 inches. Custom sizes are also available as specified.
Select the door size based on the equipment and services that need to be accessed rather than simply selecting the smallest available opening.
